As a blind person interested in writing interactive fiction for many years,I feel it is my duty to test out all systems, for blind accessibility purposes. Unfortunately, ADRIFT 5.0 is completely inaccessible, the entire interface consisting of unlabeled buttons, text fields and other controls. I was very pleased with the accessibility of Adrift 3.9 and somewhat accessibility of 4.0. As previously stated I found that ADRIFT 5.0 is completely unusable by persons with a blind or visual impairments. ADRIFT 5 has a lot of potential, because both blind and sighted people can focus on the writing aspects of Interactive Fiction. If any developers (if there are any devs other than Campbell) wish to talk to other blind and visually impaired people (including programmers experienced in Microsoft .net programming), you can register for the forum at http://forum.audiogames.net. |

Is there a free screenreader that I can use to test it out? |

Yes. There is a free screen reader called Nonvisual Desktop Acess (NVDA). Get at www.nvda-project.org. |

As a previously accessible product, it is a little bit disappointing that Adrift5.0 has become inaccessible, which is why I am voting up on this. If as a blind person my help is needed in testing out this software's accessibility if you choose to address this issue, you may contact me via email at stormingsteve@stevend.net |

It seems Campbell is not interested in improving accessibility with ADRIFT at all. I created this enhancement 3 years ago, and still Campbell has not done a thing about it. I have offered to test new versions, have pointed Mr. Wild in the direction of the NVDA screen reader and the AudioGames.net forum (a forum where blind/visually impaired people discuss accessible games) and still nothing.
If something is not done about this, I can only blame Mr. Wild's disinterest in expanding ADRIFT's audience further. (Not to mension that after all these years, ADRIFT still does not run on Mac OS and Linux without the use of mono, but that's another story for another day.)
Good day and God bless. |
