Being able to choose characteristics of your player character has always seemed rather cool to me. Anyone thinking of doing something like this should however make sure that such information actually gets used in the game otherwise it is a rather superfluous choice which some players would find annoying, like being asked to input a name but never have any NPC use it when talking to them.
