By David Whyld - See all my reviews

Quite buggy. I wasn't able to enter the house at first, but then I examined my clothes and suddenly, without doing anything else, I was able to enter. The game also seemed to think I was picking the clothes up when I examined them, but in fact I had them with me all along. By the look of things, there was a bug with there being two sets of clothes – the ones I started with and another set intended to get me inside the house – but the two sets got mixed up somewhere along the way. I was also able to open the curtains in the corridor but the description from outside seemed to think they were still drawn.

After struggling for a while to make any progress, I resorted to cheating and looked in the Developer. Here I struggled some more. V5's organisation of tasks and objects is pretty chaotic compared to the simple straightforward approach used in V4, but after a while I managed to figure out that there was an item I needed in the porch location. Apparently I could find this item by examining the porch swing... but for the life of me I couldn't find any mention of the porch swing anywhere in the location description. Either it's there and I simply missed it or there's some task I needed to complete in order to make it show up, but I never did discover what that task was. Then again, the item in question doesn't show up in the location description when dropped so unless you actually know it's there (i.e. unless you cheated like I did), there's no way you'd find it.

I persevered for a while longer, running into some strange logic at one point – one item is, apparently, too large for me to carry it through a door, but it's perfectly fine for me to go climbing through a window with it! – but as every puzzle seemed to require me to struggle my way through the Developer (i.e. cheat) to solve it, I decided I was better off not playing it any further.
