Short but entertaining, could use a bit more testing, Wed 19th May 2021
By Denk - See all my reviews

(Please do not play this with an ADRIFT 5 interpreter as the game might appear broken. Please use the ADRIFT 4 Runner or equivalent)

This short but entertaining game would have deserved four stars if it wasn't for a bug and confusing moments. I'm sure a few testers could have discovered those problems. But I guess people rarely get testers for small entries in local ADRIFT competitions, which is a bit of a shame, as there is a lot of good stuff in this game.

The game mechanics are like a standard text adventure though it only has a few puzzles. One could argue that this game has a heavy theme (regrets), which I am normally not fond of, but this is more like an interesting story without being overly intellectual.

The purpose of exploring your cabin is to trigger memories and visions. Most of the game works quite well, however, one memory can be triggered twice (and you get points twice for it). Thus, you cannot obtain all memories as the game tells you the game is over once you have reached 9 points. And that is also confusing: Even if you do not trigger the bug above, the game will tell you that the game has ended before you have seen the ending. You can do exactly one thing and only one thing when the game tells you it has ended. Then you will see the ending. Well, you are told in the "about"-text that you must leave the cabin when you have 9 points, but you will often have forgotten that before you reach 9 points.

Anyway, it was well written and entertaining, but a bit of a shame that many old games do not get bug fixed, as they can be just as good, or even better than new games.

Well written, Tue 6th Sep 2005

Proof, if proof be needed, that David Whyld can write games other than OTT comedies. One of the few ’interactive stories’ that focus on plot and to heck with puzzles. All in all a success from Adrifts greatest contributor (game-wise).

  A delightful game., Thu 1st Sep 2005

I enjoyed this game very much. It requires an eye for detail that you don’t come across very often; quite nice.
